About Mr. Sven

I’m a science teacher and curriculum designer who greatly enjoys the work I do. I teach both middle and high school science in Utah, and my focus is helping students learn at a high level while still keeping things engaging and meaningful.

I have advanced degrees in education and I’m currently working on my doctorate. My doctoral research looks at how teachers adjust their instruction to better support student learning when state standards are revised. A lot of this connects to what I try to do in my own classroom each day.

As a teacher, I like having clear expectations and strong structure, but I also believe students need some flexibility in how they learn. I’ve found that students do better when they know exactly what success looks like and have different ways to get there. That is what led me to focus on mastery-based and personalized learning, especially through tools like choice boards.

I also spend a lot of time creating and refining lessons, trying to make things more effective and easier to manage. I share what I build because I know how difficult it can be to take big ideas like mastery-based learning and actually make them work in a real classroom; my trial and error has been mainstreamed for the ease of others.

At the end of the day, I believe all students can learn at high levels when they are given the right support, clear goals, and a system that is designed with them in mind. That belief drives everything I do in my classroom and beyond.
