Why I believe in Mastery-Based Learning

I believe in personalized, competency-based, and mastery-based learning because it holds every student to high expectations while providing the structure and flexibility needed for them to succeed. This approach shifts the focus from simply completing tasks to demonstrating true understanding, ensuring learning is meaningful, lasting, and accessible to all students. If a student wants to learn, the battle is already won.

This belief is supported by recent research showing that competency-based and mastery-based systems increase student engagement, strengthen content retention, and promote student ownership by allowing learners to progress based on demonstrated understanding rather than time (REL Southeast, 2021; NASBE, 2025; Washington State Board of Education, 2021).
